Meet the Porters!

In order starting on the left is the larger matter Porter Pride. In the middle is the standard Porter and the third is the Charles Herring strain Porter. Basically what you might expect to see from the porters as they have been around for many years. The flavor is the same, shape, color, size is no different as far as I can tell. However I thought to note the CH porter is more vigorous plant and slightly more productive and in general the CH Porter is much healthier looking plant.

OzoneNY, great looking Porters. They hold a special place in my heart since they were the first tomatoes we grew when I was a kid in the 1950s. Where did you get your seeds for Porters Pride? I have been on a quest to find the real Porters Pride seed for the past 4 years, but I have bought seeds from several different companies and each one of them has produced regular Porter tomatoes. Yours is the first one I've seen that looks true to the variety.

I can say the same as Arlie ^^ except the 1950s part.

This is my first time to see an actual size difference.

I grew Porters (seeds from Everwilde.com) several times and grew Porters Pride this spring. Seeds for the PP from MMMM. Both strains looked the same; neither looked like your middle or right tomato.

I did a google search on porter pride and porter improved last fall and as you might imagine I got several hits. I already had the standard Porter and I had recently purchased here on TV the CH Porter so I purchased seed from a random 5 seed suppliers who advertised Porter Pride or Porter Improved.
I gave away these experimental plants to neighbors and just asked to keep tabs on the results. Two of the 5 make the same pink color fruit but they are larger and more round as you can see. I saw many post here on TV who said they had grown both types but I was having trouble with identifying what was what and where I could get seeds. Not a total surprise since Porter and Sons are out of business many years. So I cast a big net in hope I could get a favorable result and this is what I ended up with.

Try Willhite Seeds for Porter & Porter Improved seeds. Their descriptions are spot on for the tomatoes shown in OzoneNy's post.

I recently had trouble finding Porter's Pride seed that was correct. What was sold as Porter's Pride always turned out to be Porter. Finally got the true variety from Reimer's.

Ozone NY, can you list the specific seed suppliers where you recieved the correct seed for the Improved Porter? I asked earlier, but was probably not real clear. Thank You, Arlie

Thanks for the side-by-side comparison photos and the info. Is the one pictured on the right an albino strain?

In our garden, I can finally see and show the difference between Porter's Pride (Left) and Porter (Right).

I have a lot of seeds already saved of both and will be saving more.

I got the correct Porter Pride seeds from http://store.tomatofest.com/Porter_s...p/tf-0399e.htm and http://www.reimerseeds.com/porter-pride-tomato.aspx

These seeds produced the correct larger than the standard porter tomato. If you like, I have plenty of seeds I can send you. whistech PM if interested

I'm growing Porter received from the mmmm swap. The tomatoes weigh avg 0.5 oz, and isn't particularly drought tolerant. Do you think I have the right one?

I just weighed many and all were from 0.6-0.8 oz. Porter is the only tomato plants that I have successfully over-summered here. I sent a lot of Porter seeds in to the MMMM.

Thanks Salt. I've read desc that Porter weighs 2 oz so I was quite puzzled.
