please recommend a variety
That only gets about 2-3 feet tall (& compact) and can produce very good tasting tomatoes that are about a half pound to a pound.

Siletz is Det that grows about 3 ft tall. Fruit size is in 6 to 12 oz range. Taste is good too.

I would start with the Dwarf project new releases thread here, in the CHDwarf project subforum. it's on the homepage.

I like NBD, Tasmanian Chocolate, and Mano for dwarfs.
Cole is a compact determinate I like, but the tomatoes are not big. Plant size can be influenced by growing conditions, soil, container size, etc. Jet Star is a hybrid you might consider. The plants get chest-high for me, but I have seen them top out at about 3' in other gardens. |

It's a bit difficult to tell how tall a plant is going to get, but starting with a dwarf or determinate is a step in the right direction. I've never tried Hoskins-Barger, but Heritage and the Sample Seed Shop both sell it. It sounds like it would fit the bill nicely.

tatianastomatobase.com has a store with many early, determinate varieties, some of which can get over 8oz. Sand Hill Preservation also has several that might interest you. (You didn't mention earlies, but that's what I've been researching lately, so … there you go.) I just bought several new tomatoes from there. So, I can probably tell you more about them next year.
EM-Champion sounds like it should work (3' tall; 6-12 oz. fruit). I'm not sure how tall the plants get, but you might try some of these, as they're listed as determiante, semi-determinate, compact determinate, dwarf, or such; the fruit sizes are about right: * Sibirskaya Troika (Tatiana's) * Volgogradskiy 323 (Tatiana's) * Novcerkasskij 416 (Tatiana's) * Praleska (Tatiana's) * Scotia (Tatiana's) * Kalinka (Tatiana's) * Burpee Sunnybrook Earliana (SHPC) * Burpee Gloriana (SHPC) * Coldset (SHPC) * Earliana (SHPC) * Early Glee (SHPC) * Early Rouge (SHPC) * Backfield (SHPC) * Early Glee (SHPC) * Maria (SHPC) * Moskovich (SHPC) * North Dakota Earliana (SHPC) * Polar Star (SHPC; out of stock) * Sheyenne (SHPC) * Sioux (SHPC) * Sophie's Choice (SHPC) * Superbec (I think both) * Ultrabec (SHPC) * Urban Beefsteak (SHPC) * Urbikany (SHPC) * Rosabec (SHPC) Last edited by shule1; September 25, 2016 at 02:57 AM. |

I am impressed with many of the Saraev collection, Bezassadnyi, 0-33, and Otbor are very compact determinate plants, that produce loads of nice looking good tasting tomatoes, they are very early too. You will like many of the others in the collection also.
Some of the dwarfs are pretty compact too, Arctic Rose comes to mind. NBD gets rather large in my greenhouses, 5-6 feet. I obtained the seed of the Saraev tomatoes from Tatiana. |

I have seeds for RosellaPurple, King of Siberia, and WildFred for next year. New to me container growing experiment. They might fit your need and description. |

Quite large, very beautiful fruit. Deep red with dark green shoulders right up until they fully ripen. Unfotunately a bit acidic for my taste. |
