Default What is it called...

when you have a tomato truss that has one tomato like its description and then the other 5 on the truss are all of different sizes and shapes yet all picked at the same time. Is there a term for that?

This was a plant that I had cut back and didn't get the pot emptied and it had started new growth so I just let it go ahead and grow.

I have a cute, plump heart cherry, which is the normal shape and then I have rounds, oblong, big little, round. Crazy looking for somebody who hasn't seen it before.

Also, I had saved seeds from the first growing season of the plant, but I don't know if I save seeds from this crazy second growths shapes, will the tomatoes come out the normal shapes it supposed to be or will I get these different sizes and shapes. Not sure if I should even try and save the off-growth ones or not.

I can understand if one fruit on a truss is different from the others, usually different colorered and that would be a somatic mutation.

But if all the others on the truss are of different sizes and shapes, I have no good explanation for that.

Several decades ago I did have something like that but never saved seeds since it didn't make sense and I wasn't going to start growing out different lines from different shapes.

One variety that might come close to what you described is

http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Prue

What is the name of the variety you were growing?

Star,

I have seen Early Girl grow both round and heart shaped tomatoes on the same plant. (I may be wrong) but I think Worth had an Early Girl plant produce like that too.

I also have seeds that were marked Zapotec, but they produce both Zapotec shaped tomatoes and round ones on the same plant. They are absolutely a cross. Part Zapotec and part ??? The fruit of both shapes are large cherry tomato sized.

I think yours sound a lot like how the Early Girl grew for me. Or as Carolyn described a somatic mutation.

I would trust Carolyn's opinion a lot more than mine

Thanks for jumping in Carolyn. I was hoping you would. I have had before a single fruit different shape but nothing like this. The variety was Pravda. Before I had cut it back for end of season it produced loads of the beautiful little heart shaped cherries and they were excellent eating. Have no idea why the second go round is such. If I get a chance, will try and take a pic tomorrow and show you all of them. Hopefully I have some batteries that work.

Thanks. I won't save them then. I have so many other ones I want to try.

Great thing about tomatoes is you never stop learning. Always something new and different to experience with them. After I try and get a picture, then I'm going to eat them. Hadn't because I didn't know what I had in case I needed to save seeds. Hope they as good as the original first ones.

OK, the variety is Pravda.

Tania says

Heirloom from the 1950's? Strange

Then I find

http://www.doublehelixfarms.com/pravda

Which makes more sense to me.

Just curious, but where did you get your Pravda seeds from? And I ask since I couldn't find any from Googling, nor from Ventmarin.

I got my seeds from the MMMM Swap. Have no idea who had sent them in. They performed great like description on Double Helix Farm, except mine had a bit more heart shape at top to them than what is shown on the site. Only problem I had with Pravda at first was a bit of BER and that was easily taken care of after reading your big post a ways back about BER. My plants were getting to much water which they didn't like. Once I read your post and cut back on the water, I had loads of beautiful fruit that was good eating.

Sorry for the lousy picture. Me and cameras don't get along, but maybe you can see what I mean. They all different sizes and shapes. The top left one with the little heart dip is what they should look like. Like I said, all from same truss and all picked at same time. They a little wrinkled as they been sitting on the tray on my counter for a couple weeks and just now getting round to them.
