Big Orange Volunteer. Isn't it strange how sometimes a volunteer tastes better than known varieties. You're better at naming them than I am.

I grew Black Strawberry, Faelans First Snow and Rev. Michael Keys and 2016.
These 3 were all fantastic and are on my list for 2017. RMK was very productive. The flavor was very good. Sweeter than I expected with a nice zing as well. Faelan's was also very productive. It did have the variegated foliage and the fruits were nice and dark with great flavor. I also liked Black Strawberry. Mine were the size of a cherry tomato. Here is a photo. The striping had faded because these were overripe at this point. Bill |

Many of them I never ever heard of, SunGold F1 is the only one I've grown - and yes, it was very prolific, productive, and had that distinctive foliage scent. (it might be a hereditary thing to be able to discern it ..)
Nice tropical fruity taste, but I understand those who have said they found the aftertaste slightly metallic & artificial. (I don't know how a natural product can taste 'artificial', but alas, that's a description I have come across more than once.) Still good. |

I'll also grow Big Orange Volunteer this season. It's a volunteer from ContainerTed's garden - a larger OP said to taste like SunGold F1. Even the plant smells the same. http://www.tomatoville.com/showthrea...ange+Volunteer

I grew black strawberry last year. It was pretty good for a blue tomato. Tasted better than amethyst jewel last year.
I didn't get to save seed last year. When I was looking up this variety again at J & L garden, it notes that it is an experimental variety. So I'm not sure which F? generation it is. I'll be growing big orange volunteer, MarNar F6, and rebel alliance too. Last edited by KC.Sun; February 6, 2017 at 07:06 PM. |
