Default Which Tomatovillians have tasted these store bought tomatoes?

Found these in a market in Pismo Beach Ca. I bought the Mini Kumato and Zima. The Zima was one of the best store bought grape tomatoes i have ever tasted. I know several of you have tasted and liked these and am wondering if anyone has grown the seeds out. If so was it the same tomato or something totally different. They were a bit pricey at 3.99 a pack but the Zima's were worth it. I am saving seed for sure.

I have bought all of them. the zimas and kumatos were very good the wildwonder or whatever it was...blech for the ones in the package that I got. I am willing to pay the 3.99 knowing how much it takes to grow tomatoes here in the winter... so for me it is a cheap tomato fix. I think it was the zimas I regrew. they are a decent greenhouse tomato but didn't survive outdoors. I don't think my tomatoes tasted the same nor looked as much like what I saved the seeds from, but I still liked them.

Grow them out and see. It can't hurt and should be fun to see what you get.

I bought some Compari tomatoes a few months ago and have them growing now. I don't see any difference in flavor. I did buy another batch of Compari's from a different store and noticed it was terrible compared to the others so maybe some growers are saving seeds instead of paying the high price for those Holland breeds.

The Zimas are a very good store tomato. I enjoy eating them. The Kumato is pretty good and they are grown in Canada and Mexico. The two of them do taste different so watch for which location that you have bought and try to do a taste test to see which tastes best to you. I did not enjoy the mixed Wild Wonders at all.

I have a Campari tomato that was picked green at the end of last September. It is still red and firm, even after 4+ months of sitting in a cool location though developing a few spots now.. It seems to be a long keeping tomato but I noticed the flavour and texture gradually deteriorated the longer it was stored. It seems there's no telling how old a Campari tomato is in the store.

That may be the problem, I have them in the greenhouse and wait till they're red before I pick. I let 4 people taste them and they want more. I'll post some updated pics in the greenhouse section, 1 trust has 25 tomatoes on it, crazy.

MissS that's good info and I'm sure growing conditions make all the difference too.

I would rate Zima a 7 or 7.5 and the Kumato (Bruno Rosso seem the same) as 6 or 6.5 - probably as good as store bought can get.

I have bought Kumato many times. Have saved seeds and have grown F2 and F3. The fruits were identical to ones sold at stores. Now I have F4 seeds but not growing it.
Taste wise I agree wit Craig's rating, 6.5 on scale of 1 to 10.

I tried the Kumato, and didn't like or dislike them, which by my taste buds, is an improvement for grocery store tomatoes.

Our youngest Grandson (4 years old) loves tomatoes so much that my wife bought him a roma tomato to eat while they shopped for breakfast food a few days ago. One roma = 18 cents. They also brought home an 8 oz. container of tomatoes that were named, "Grape Tomato". I tasted one and it was slightly acidic and had some flavor. They bought them at Walmart.

Here's a picture of the few he didn't devour.

Campari are the only supermarket tomatoes I'll buy, but only if they smell like tomatoes. If I can't find a package that has enough ripe tomato aroma, then we don't have tomatoes that week.

I have grown the Campari tomato out to F5. It is a productive tomato with pretty good taste and texture. I don't think that I would grow it over an heirloom, but it is enjoyed in the summer all the same. I still grow it, so that says something, but it is not on the "Must Grow" list.

Same here. It scratches the itch during the winter, but I wouldn't waste any of my precious garden space on it during the growing season.

I thought that the Mini Kumato's were bland and almost had that hydroponic chemical nutrient taste to them. The Zima's on the other hand were really good. Both were a product of Mexico not Canada. Makes sense though because we are way closer to Mexico. I will steer clear of the variety they sell called Wild Wonders. The store also had a variety called Angel Sweet. I may go back and give those ones a try. I still hope someone here can confirm that Zima is OP. It is hard to want to give up a spot in the garden for a tomato that may not frow true.

I've tried the Zimas. They were delicious! I also tried the Wild Wonder mixed pack. There was a purple one I like and a saladette sized yellow one I loved when it was getting overripe. I saved seeds but I have evil cats and they knocked the paper plates down.

I'll try again this year.

On this tomato intrigued me the name Zima. In the Czech and other Slavic languages means Zima Winter.
