Default Question about mutation

Can one tomato on a plant have a mutation and if it does will all of the seeds from that one tomato have the same mutation? This is assuming its a genetically stable type of plant, not a hybrid.

Thanks,
Ginny

There are two kinds of mutations that one can find with tomatoes, one is a mutation in the seed DNA, the other is called a somatic mutation which occurs in cells of the actual plant.

And yes, with a somatic mutation there can be just one fruit different from all others and saved seed is stable .

Here's just one example, but there are many more

See also Yellow Riesentraube in the above link.

There was just ONE fruit that was yellow on a plant that had all red ones,so it was a somatic mutation that gave us Yellow Riesentraube.

Carolyn,

Thank you so much for that clear explanation. That was exactly what I was trying to find out. I googled several times and could not come up with the answer in a format I could understand. Much appreciated... :-)
