Default Sweetest golden or orange tomatoes other than sungold

After reading the info on orange tomatoes having lycopene that is easier absorbed I want to make sure I grow a bunch this year!

Just wanted to see what golden or orange tomatoes were the sweetest for others besides sungold.

The other one I grew was I think called golden cherry and it was just like sungold only it didn't crack as bad. But it wasn't as big of a plant either.

My sungolds spilt really really bad.

Sunsugar was, (I believe), developed from the Sungold line but with a thicker skin and thus does not split nearly as much. The colour is more of a bright yellow- orange than Sungold's golden colour.

Howdy.

Last year I grew a few Sungolds, 1 Sun sugar, and 4 St. Lucia Grapes. If it hadn't been for the Sun sugar, I'd have sworn up and down Sungold was my favorite-even with the splitting problem. But I did grow a Sun sugar, and made side-by-side taste tests, and I couldn't believe how sweet Sun sugar is!

I have 30 Sun sugar seedlings just starting to grow their true leaves-some are for me; some are for friends, and some are for the community garden.

You didn't necessarily ask about grapes, but here are my two bits:

They took longer to mature than I expected, but they were excellent!! They weren't quite as sweet as the sungolds or sunsugars, but they were firm; had well rounded flavor, produced tons of toms, and transported better. They must not have been popular in my area last year as I don't see their seeds for sale this year. <sigh>

Best of luck!!

I've grown both sungold and sun sugar. Never had that bad a splitting problem. Don't over water.

Sungold is sweater than sun sugar but it depends on when you pick them. They have to be bright orange to have that full sweet taste

Are you talking about cherry types only? If not then try Aunt Gertie's Gold, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, or Yellow Brandywine.

Has anyone tried Sweet Orange II from Peters Seed Research?

Outstanding cherry tomato! Nearly as fruity sweet in flavor as the best Fruity selections but with vastly better crack resistance and better fruit size. This orange cherry tomato is one the deer zero in on for eating. Vigorous indeterminate vines.

Thanks everyone

Sunsugar is one I'm definitely going to try this year. Aunt gerty's gold is another I was thinking about along with hawaiian pineapple.

Sugolds grew a big healthy plant for me but there was no other way to keep them from spliting than to pick them well before being ripe.

Even when I picked them they would split.

So that was the big problem for me with sungold. Hopefully sunsugar will not split or at least not as bad.

I've grown both Sun Gold and Sunsugar, and I prefer the flavor of Sunsugar.
