Cage/trellis idea

For those of you who use 2" x 4" wire round cages, and find it neccessary to cut and make the opennings bigger, here is an idea to try out.

1. You can cut the entire roll of wire panel in half one shot using abrasive disc cutter.

2. curl sharp ends or use one drop of hot-melt glue.
3. Tie two sections together back-to-back.

Of course when these are not in use, they are stackable to save room.

It doesn't matter. The branches will go thru the wire squares. For melons, peas, etc. also no problem.

I had some left over hog wire ' and made some cages that were to small and added some extra wire 'basicly the same as your diagram. It work's fine ;great idea;

Another self-supporting arrangement for different veggies, flowers, tomatoes. Of course, when this is not in use, it can be "accordion folded" and stored in very little space.

I actually like Bullys set up - his are half circles with stakes on the outside - I have the circular home made concrete mesh cages (was my first year for them in 2006)

These here Earls Fauxs were hung for treason..or was it for being RL..Hmmm..can't remember.

Bully:

Your cages look like they are made out of galvanized wire...is this true. And the size of the holes are 4x4"? All of the concrete mesh wire I find is completely rusty.

I don't remember my Chemistry 101, but I think we have few members who are chemists.

Is there chemical reaction between zinc (galvanization) and copper sulfide spray?

Adenn1,

When I got mine from Lowes, there were some that were more rusted than others. I took one of them that were less rusted, and sprayed them with silver Rustoleum - they aren't perfect (I do live near the ocean, alot of salts) but they were able to hold up ...

Thanks for the info Tom...I wondered about spraying them. By the way...how tall was the CRW you found--5 or 6 feet tall. I think HD only had 5' rolls.

Dcarch,

What your thinking about it dissimilar metal reactivity.
I wouldn’t think it would pose much of a threat with the application you are thinking of.
But if you screw an aluminum fitting to a steel one in a year you won’t be able to get it off if you don’t use grease on the threads.
Also if strapping a copper pipe to a piece of uistrut that is galvanized you should use a plastic bushing so the metal doesn’t touch
If not after a sort while there will be a hole in the pipe.

I use this stuff all of the time.
They use it off shore by the barrel full it is great stuff.
(DO NOT GET IT IN YOUR EYES) wear goggles!!!!!!
It contains phosphoric acid and will make the ground boil if you pore some there.

No worries though it will kill the rust and you wont have to worry about it coming back.
The same stuff comes by several different brand names but it is all about the same, you should be able to get it at a hardware store just look around.

all concrete mesh is rusty ' the wire like bully is using is galvanized and will not rust for year's and years . lowes and home depot sell's it in rolls with a variety of square sizes to choose from. just look in the fenceing dept.

Seriously, I really don't see rust as a concern.
I've used this and or similar wire for years with no problems.... except for last year when it ripped my arm open. Ten stitches and a tetnus shot.
