Large Fruited OP Container Friendly

Hi all,
I chose 6 varieties this year just for fruit size and container friendly
.....To see how it goes .
Even at risk of not being as productive as the medium size fruit varieties
in Containers ...I just had to try it ..

These are the 6 :
Zinulya
Krasnodor Titans
Loxton Ladd
EM Champion
Velmozha
Brandy Fred

All Plants are very healthy ...

but EM Champion and Velmozha

are ahead and set fruit early .....by a country mile !

Does anyone else have insights into this Large fruited container endeavor ?

If you had planted medium sized fruit, which varieties would you have chosen?

I planted 5 dwarfs and the fruits are small to medium, and they are somewhat productive. Each plant will have one or two medium sized fruits with the rest of the fruits being small, but good.

No insights but sign me up for your updates! Just looked at Velmozha on Tomatobase... nice looking fruit!
Hearts have one big advantage for cool short seasons - no catfacing.

Ananas Noire is the smallest indet, with some of the largest tomatoes in my garden. I have 2 of them, both the same size. It is early too.

Funny you should ask ....this year I have about 42+ varieties
(cutting back this year ..lol)

This year I have 6 other OP varieties of the international dwarf project :


Dwarf Arctic Rose
Dwarf Pink Passion (new for me )
Sarandipity (new for me)
Boronia
Yukon Quest
Sweet Adelaide ( new to me)

I was so impressed last year with Boronia and Dwarf Arctic Rose last year

they had to come back.......

Yukon Quest was a Hardy one for me from before

I am always a happy camper with Yaponskiy Karlik (Japanese Dwarf)

Oh ya ... I have Zolotoe Serdtse going this year as well

It's a very cold spring here, and I have only one heart variety coming along... Already cramped for space, but I'll try to include more hearts next year.
The ones I have grown have been great, but some (Kosovo, Fishlake oxheart) were susceptible to BER.
Russian ones (Zolotoy Korol, Zolotoy Serdtse) not so.

I just try a bunch of likely candidate Tomato varieties .......

and the ones that are outstanding in my cool climate culture

......make themselves known by observation and trial .

Here it is Ok , OK ,

from my environmental perspective and this look from the early season.

These are the 6 highlighted Large fruited Container friendly varieties :

Zinulya
Krasnodor Titans
Loxton Ladd
EM Champion
Velmozha
Brandy Fred


at this time in the season ......


No. 1 by a wide margin is

EM Champion ....it appears to be a true

Large fruited , EARLY, container friendly ,

to sun , cold starts , and record heat spells ...WOW !

still setting fruit well ahead of the others... WOW !


No. 2 is Velmozha with lots of fruit set .....well along

similar attributes to EM champion one fruit with BER though (only one).

no.3 ribbon is for Loxton ladd healthy looking and set fruit ...etc.


No.4 guess is BrandyFred ....nothing is wrong ...plant is beautiful and healthy just later along and no fruit set yet ..or as early ...no fruit yet ...but looks good...


No.5 Zinulya same as above no fruit set ... I would also note I think Zinulya

is a bit more sensitive to being set out in marginal situations than the above
4 varieties with wind , sun , cold etc. but it looks good ..just later .

No. 6 Krasnodor Titans seems not as comfortable in the 7 gallon situation ...
seems "hungrier " for nutes and no fruit set yet . lots of blossums..


Before you Jump all over me for this Mid June rating ..

I fully acknowledge that some varieties will develop later in their own time and nothing is wrong ...and it most likely is worth the wait ....


I think it is a good early sample to rate :


For environmental comparison....... other early varieties in my 2017 garden going full guns or have set fruit already include ...

Besides EM Champion there are some other Siberian determinate tomato varieties with large fruit:

Rozovyi Myod (=Pink Honey in English)
Danko
Velmozha
Kanopus
Gina
Tolstyi Jack (=Fat Jack in English)
Shtambovyi Krupnoplodnyi (=Tree-type Large-fruited in English)

also not large one but Dwarf Lemon Ice .....

My usual ..put out and "protect if necessary" dance ......Is May 2nd ...around here....
(Just a bad habit ...with cool maritime ...venture)

But This year was such a crappy record cold spring ...with

Big snow even ..in winter...... I delayed put out till about

May 14/ 15 ....


and then we had that record heat 1st week of June and other

"protect if necessary " concerns for container based gardens ...

But right now Today it is ....."June-tober ".......back to
more normal seasonal temps a High of only 13-15 C....

A protected situation from North/west wind can help ...like up against a south facing fence ....( Just as long as normal cool am overcast weather systems dominate).

can help with a micro climate etc.

I have some Krasnodor Titan seeds. I hope they produce for you. I would like to know more about them. I asked about them and this nice moderator lady up in NY named Carolyn told me they are basically rocks.
