It is interesting, and would be great, if it truly altruistic. My concern remains with all GM foods that purport to be great advances in dealing with malnutrition and disease, will these tomatoes be postitioned in such a manner as to truly help people, or be patented, closed off and sold in a manner that makes them less accessible to those who need it most. Companies have a right, and need, to make profit, but, GM foods still seem very risky from an overall seed diversity point of view.

I would rather see people eating balanced diets. (And growing their own food, though I realize that is not practical for a great many people). If the folate gene goes into production for a staple crop such as wheat or rice, it might become hard to avoid if for some reason you wanted to. (Maybe the first big controversy about this type of thing was fluoride addition to water supplies. Even though it helped prevent cavities, many people objected to not being able to make the choice themselves.)

From the link, it sounded like the tomato was being used as a test case. Does that mean they think not enough people eat tomatoes?

beans and greens are a pretty low tech, low price option.
a quick google search gives a list of foods that are high in folate.
