Vegetables from India
Any idea what these are, when to pick and how to cook them?
The green veggies on left are bottle gourds, I've picked some that are over 10#. The yellow on the right are like melons but I may have picked too early, it was crunchy like eating an apple... have no idea what it is. This is a big white basketball sized veggie, no idea what it is or when it's ripe. 3 bottle gourds that are about 10# each The yellow melon sliced, they are baseball to softball sized. I ID'd the bottle gourds from another post and an article on Indian vegetables I stumbled across in an old magazine.

How does the yellow melon taste? I have been looking around for a good tasting, smallish melon that can be grown vertically. ETA: Quote:

Yes, nice spread for sure.
I am familiar with some of those from Asian market back in Atlanta. I have tried some of them, including bitter melon and Indian eggplant. I am growing Fenugreek (Methi in Indian ) . Beside its green, the seeds are even better. What is more is that its roots are nitrogen fixer, just like alfalfa.

Bottle gourd recipes here: http://food.ndtv.com/lists/10-best-b...4?desktop=true
My next door neighbor is from India. They gave me a squash last summer, that looked just like those green ones. It had a sweet flavor and wasn't as watery as a zucchin. I didn't know what to do with it at the time. Later, his wife told me there are many ways to cook it but in her family it is mostly used in sweet recipes. It would have made a good sweet bread. |

I googled tindi melon and none look like the white basketballs. The closest thing I found for the yellow ones are baby canary melon or mago melon. I only tasted one, which was hard and crunchy like an apple, not much flavor but not unpleasant. If it's a melon, I don't think it was ripe yet.
