Saddened to hear this. Thank you for posting, Marsha. Most of my favourites are potato leafed.

Thanks for letting us know about Bill. I knew Bill for many decades starting back on AOL. He could be sweet sometimes, nasty sometimes, I saw a whole range of emotions from him. He was originally a school teacher as I recall. Well I remember when Dean Slater and his partner the rev, drove down to NM where Bill was at the time and living in a trailer and in poor health even back then, brought Bill up to Michigan, along with his complete seed collection. And then Dean asked me to ID what was written on the seed packs, I tried, some I could ID,others I couldn't. I also remember him asking Craig L and myself if we wanted to trade PL varieties,we both said sure, but it ended up not being a 2-way trade as I remember, possibly Craig remembers more.. I felt so bad for Bill since his health was terrible in MI, he was in a wheelchair and still trying to grow tomatoes and do some breeding but he finally had to go to a nursing home. But his legacy of collecting PL varieties will always stand, it was what he was know for IMO, and I hope that some of the seed packets had viable seeds as well, and were grown out and perpetuated in honor of him. Carolyn, and maybe some of the newer members here wouldn't know that Bill was also a registered Tville member once.RIP Bill.

I dont like to think of death as a rest but the beginning of a great adventure of the mind for eternity with no need to rest.

I recall the journey that brought Bill up to Michigan. I remember him fondly for his great love of the potato leafed tomatoes. He did a lot of good for the world that he left behind. He taught many students and bred some very nice tomatoes for others to enjoy.
I salute you Mr. Malin. Peace.

Does anyone recall his TVille name?
As a PL lover, I thank you sir, and all keepers of the old and breeders of the new tomato varieties; without you where would I be today. |

I had not heard of Bill Malin, but from what I've read in this thread - I'm glad he pursued collecting PL varieties. I am sad when anyone passes.

Carolyn, I recall the fellow who did grow out some of the varieties, but can't think of his name right now. Can recall he was on iDig, lived in (maybe) Alabama or Georgia, had 2 lovely red headed girls ( he was a red head too) and was involved in some of the breeding stuff with Dean Slater and the rev person too.
To the best of my recollection ( which can be faulty at times), both he and Dean grew some out and thought all the varieties were viable still. |

Sad to read of his passing. Imp you may be thinking of Blane Horton from Mississippi.
