Thick-stemmed seedlings?

Okay, this is unusual, for me. I noticed amongst my American Original Beefsteaks (source: Totally Tomatoes) that I had several sprouts that came up late, and with really thick stems. Look:

What's going on here?

Looks like they have no growth tips. It happens sometimes but I don't know why. I usually see a few every year. Just pull them up and toss them.

Did you have any dwarf variety seeds in the area?

The majority are tall and fairly stretched as though they went a while without supplemental light?. These short stocky ones look like seedlings that came up after you put the others under lights a couple days after the stretched ones were growing with a cover on?

They were all subject to the same conditions: set up in my garage under a big halogen worklamp about 4' above them, set on a 12hr timer. The stretched ones did come up first, yes. I'm gently repotting the seedlings such that everyone has an individual cell or pot, so we'll see what happens.

the late short ones look to be non-starters to me. I have had a few of them myself.. someone called them something a while ago when I asked about them... mules? I can't remember but they never produced anything for me while I gave them the time to produce something. I quit wasting my time and energy on them and tossed them.
