Default Taste of Black Cherry

So many people laud Black Cherry that I planted one this year and have just eaten my first few. What a shock! The taste was like distilled essence of tomato. I have never had that strong a tomato taste despite my have eaten all kinds during my 82 years. But was it ever sour!! Has this been your experience?

I love Black Cherry,never a sour taste ever and here's some other info that might help,from a Google search/Tville.

Never had a sour one that I can remember. And I LOVE black cherry.

However, I've noticed that the taste of most of my tomatoes improves over the season . . . and then gets a little blah again as the vines get really old.

I just picked my first ripe Black Cherry from my one plant this weekend, and boy was it delicious.. sweet, rich, just a bit of tang, and lingering.

If yours was sour, I'm thinking that perhaps you picked it/ate it before it was 100% ripe. Let the next few ripen a bit longer, either on or off the vine, preferably on.

I think I may have, but picked early in the season and they probabaly weren't ripe yet, but I was pushing it a bit in my desire to get a taste of my first tomatoes of the season, lol. Not sure if it would have been just that they were not ripe enough or that is was very early in the season and we probably didn't have enough warm weather yet.

Congrats on getting black cherry to grow and produce. I wish it didn't taste sour to you.

Black Cherry is the one cherry tomato that I have tried to grow that just wouldn't grow here.

Sorry to hear—hope it’s just too early of a taste! My notes say rich tomato, nice acidic burst, and also sweet, good texture, a real winner. Huge very healthy plant.

I grew Black Cherry for the first time last year and they were the sweetest out of all 14 varieties for us, although they didn’t produce as much as other cherries.

Good luck with your BC.
I grew it last year. I was not impressed with it overall. It had some kind of problem with new growth getting wavy. Then some branches kept dying and I kept pruning. Finally I decided just to pull it. Sungold next to it was fine and kept going til frost. I also grew Brown Cherry. That one died even before fruiting.

If you like Black Cherry, you'll love Chocolate Cherry (IMO). For me, CC is slightly larger, and definitely sweeter than BC. BC is certainly good, but I think that CC pushes the same taste envelope a little further. (I'm sure you'll find others who think the reverse!)
