is there multiflora striped black cherry ?

Hi gang …..

I am not sure what has happened mystery or mutant or mixup….


I set up a few tomato containers at my folks and

Thought one was a Sophies Choice …..


What they ended up with was a tall growing multiflora striped black/brown cherry

highly productive ...in a 5 gallon bucket ...Yikes !



It is impossible to know what has happened …..

but for last year there was zluta kytice multiflora , fireworks , rose Quartz

multiflora, sarandipity , black cherry in the neighbourhood … and more !


Is there such a thing that I have missed as a stabilized multiflora striped black cherry ?

perhaps I had seeds without knowing it ?

Intriguing Blackberry, others would be better placed than I to confirm if such a variety exists currently, but to me it sounds like the bees were busy last year. You have something worth following up there if seeds were kept.

asked my folks to keep seeds and I will get some as well

…..if it is not a variety that is a known .one......then it is

an interesting mistake …..but I guess that would make it an F1

and the next generation results from the seeds could be dubious …..

Still interesting though.

Quite unlikely to be an F1 with that combination of recessive genes, perhaps last year was the F1?
I don’t know if a stable striped black MF cherry. Certainly a good idea to save seeds and grow it out again. Do you have pictures?

no pix …….I shoulda coulda ...woulda....but was in a rush ..

They were fine tasting as well !

Quite striking as I try to concentrate on compact , dwarf, container etc.

and these were growing quite tall The results were not from my intentioned collection .

and Soren in Demark was breeding one, said he was looking for a striped Black multiflora and said not to share seeds with anyone.

Good thing that since yes,it was a multiflora,but the fruits were what I'd call a large cherry, and brown in color.

I sent him back my report and he said he would continue working on it.

I thought Patty Brown in Ohio had one,checked her now older seeds I still have but it turned out to be a black striped Heart.

The thinking part of what is left of my brain still thinks there is one out there,or once was ,in the Territorial Seeds catalog I used to get,from the Pacific NW.

the more I think about it ...the seeds may possibly have come from a seed swap ..

and been not what I thought.....(2ft high Sophie's Choice etc. ) I will check at Tatiana's


to see if I recognize some names I bought before ...that are striped ..possibly the mixup is just

me mislabeling seeds …….eeks !

was not sarandipity striped....For sure.

more like a Violet Jasper with something else mixed in .

And I am sure I do not have Violet Jasper and never grew it out ...to be mixed up with the others..

You could:
1. Grow it one more year to see if it's stable.
2. Offer the seeds to others, with or without growing one more year, so someone can follow up on it. Sounds worth stablizing.

I did look up the pix of rebel alliance ….

and though similar ...the plant I saw at my folks was real tall hang and support up about 7ft ish and then grow hang /back down. Was more "stripey" ….


The more I think about it …..if this is a result of mixup in my garden …..


zluta kytice and black cherry seem a plausible possible explanation .



I also had sarandipity (striped) in the garden last year ……

also rose quartz multiflora ...etc.

anyway this sure was not "Sophies Choice " LOL
