Who will attend a Tomato Tasting near Buffalo/Niagara Falls?

I'm wondering how many growers are in Upstate NY & PA on the forum. Please chime in & be counted. Where are you and what are you growing?

Mark, not don't get overly annoyed but to many of us upstate NY means the area between the city going directly north to the Canadian border. So according to that definition I'm in upstate NY.

Anything west of maybe Amsterdam is considered Western NY, but not upstate, so you live in Western NYS.

OK, picky, picky, picky, but that's the way it is.

So I live in upstate NY and use to grow a lot of everything but no longer do for the reasons you already knhow about having to do with limited physical mobility since Dec 12th, 2004.

Actually, upstate, (if you're not from eastern NY and are from WNY), generally means everything except the greater NYC/LI area and surrounding counties on the "mainland" but it then gets broken down further... Buffalo to Rochester to areas west of I-390 would be considered WNY whereas Syracuse & the Finger Lakes down thru Elmira east to Binghamton and the I-81 corridor would fall more into "Central" NY. And then of course there's the Southern Tier, which overlaps both. Of course we can nitpick all this forever, which is why I included my "if you're not from eastern NY" statement!

Anyway, I'm looking for members, say, within a 150 mile radius of Syracuse, NY or Buffalo, NY, or even within 200-250 miles of Buffalo, which can also include northern PA, NEPA, Southern Ontario including Niagara Falls/Hamilton/GTA, Erie PA, Ashtabula/Cleveland, etc.

I'm in Boonville, NY, which is half an hour from Utica, an hour from Syracuse, and an hour and a half from Watertown.

That makes me the ONLY one from upstate NY. The rest of you are city slickers.

I am in the Southern Tier and compared to Southampton, I am upstate. Foothills of the Catskills. (Anyone know where to find u-pick cherries around here?)

Had the most delightful treat this morning, 3 out of 3 Grandfather Ashlocks have germinated, first of all the seeds I started this weekend. This may wind up being my most favorite variety because it just does everything it's supposed to do and so happily.

So, I'd like to see if there's enough interest in upstate NY, southern Canada, and northern PA & OH to put together some type of taste-test/taste-fest, see who is growing what to contribute, who is interested in attending, discuss location, and see who will be designated as YOUR TAXI!

I'm in Toronto, Jennifer (cdntomato) is in Kingston, and Kimpossible is somewhere in the GTA, I forget where. Bless you and Remy for trying to organize a tasting! What a wonderful idea if logistics for crossing borders with fruit can be overcome.

I know food can be brought across the border. There may be some exceptions to that rule, but I know you can bring Canadian food into the US, at least for your own consumption. I think if you said you had food for a picnic and made it look as such(as opposed to a bushel full of tomatoes, lol) when asked if you were bringing anything across the border, you would get through ok.

I'm about 60 miles west of Toronto. There has been some talk about having something in Southern Ontario. But nothing says there couldn't be more than one get together within driving distance...lol.

I am in Schoharie County, about 45 mi west of Albany. In this county,"upstate" means the Adirondacks. People from NYC & LI are from "downstate".

The only common vegetables from Canada right now that aren't allowed are:

1. Fresh alliums with the tops (leeks, onions, shallots, garlic) because they found Leek Moth in Quebec and Ontario.

2. Fresh potatoes from your garden. Only store bought in the original bag are allowed.

Bring all the homegrown tomatoes you want

I too live in the Kingston area of S. Eastern Ontario. Once there is a set time and place I would be better able to determine whether I can attend? Work schedule; finding someone to care for the farm while we are gone; conflicts with fairs and Poultry exhibitions..But I'll be watching to see what is decided upon, TY
