They are all big, dark red, mostly blemish free. I wasn't too thrilled with the taste, I always sensed a carroty undertone that I don't usually find in tomatoes. But I didn't grow it in my latest (best) years for taste after I optimized plant nutrition more and more.

Carroty undertone, interesting. I will be on the lookout for that. I like the reds better than the pinks, and the purples better than them all!

After several years of growing NAR, I have liked Thessaloniki much better. Better production and overall taste.

Neves Azorean Red - one of an extremely few red beefsteaks that have exceptional taste, coming from my garden. The great tasting pinks outnumber the reds about 100 to 1.

Adding to last post I had to do that one because I posted while I was running from the police.
No not really. Not only do I like it, NAR is one of the plants that continued to grow all summer without disease and put out tomatoes in the fall. It stalled out in the july and august heat but kicked off again when the temps cooled down. If you dont like the taste go buy a store bought cardboard tomato instead. |

NAR passed the taste test. Will definitely make room for a few of these plants next year, although I missed the carroty undertones. Made for a great BLT!

NAR has always done well for me. If I remember there was a smooth skinned version and a ribbed version. I liked the smooth one better. Ten years ago or more, Carolyn Male explained the difference to me but the explanation doesn't come to mind. There is a pink variety and maybe that is the ribbed tomato. Tatiania's site shows a more ribbed pink.

NAR like any other tomato has good years and some not so good years. Sometimes is is extremely productive and very tasty. I consider it one of the best of the reds and I give it several spots in my garden every year. It also has more disease tolerance than most heirlooms and before I started grafting all my plants it was usually the last heirloom to fall to fusarium and nematodes. It usually lasted as long as Big Beef. The first year I grafted and used lean and lower it was the longest producing tomato plant in my garden giving me tomatoes for seven months and living a full nine months with an overall length in excess of 25 feet.

NAR is a real trouper here in Central Texas in my forest garden. I cant say enough good about it when it comes to large red indeterminate tomatoes. Did I spell that right? |

It’s the longest right now by far. It’s single stem and loaded!

You might also be on the look out for MarNar. I believe the Mar is marglobe. Ray Newste is up to like Gen 7 with it. Good sized, good tasting red slicer.
