Branch sprout from leaf mid rib
It's something I've never seen before.
The Gardener's Delight (Sugar Lump) plant had a sprout on the mid rib of one of its lower leaves. Now that sprout is turning into a new branch. I've seen branches form at the end of flower clusters (on indeterminate plants) but this is something new. I'm leaving it alone to see what it does next. |

Hello Green Thumb,
I was as surprised as you when I discovered that phenomenon on my Mountain Magic and Crimson Crush in 2018. There wasn't just one shoot on several plants - 3 or 4. It was a very hot year here and I probably had a heavy hand with fertilizers, so the plants were growing very wildly. However, the sprouts were weaker than the regular ones and the cuts I tried to grow from them were not doing very well. I haven't seen that since then. Milan HP |

I have cloned entire plants from just leaves in the past.
Not a surprise. |

I actually grew a tomato that weighed over a pound on a leaf branch. My plants put out all the time.

Thanks, slugworth and biscuitridge. I found these "leaf sprouts" on Woodle Orange as well.

That's interesting. How did you clone it from a leaf? Vermiculite, water, or? Maybe the little stem portion of the leaf? I'm not too surprised since plant breeders clone entire plants from just cells.
