Grub's Mystery Green

These fruits are from the RL version, but fruit is identical to the PL growing alongside. The fruit is really filling out now. I think they will be green when ripe soon. Another telling thing I have noticed with blacks and greens over the last three seasons — and do correct me if I am wrong — is that the diseased foliage turns black and not yellow. The lower leaves are largely blackening off.

good fruit set on that truss Grub!! re the leaf thing - I notice all my blacks - apart from one - get the brown crispy die back thing on their leaves - no yellowing at all. But 'black' ?? Hopefully not the dreaded 'blight' - have the leaves been black long?

Fingers still crossed for all green when ripe.

I have only one variety that has the black foliage issue instead of yellow - and it is consistent from year to year....Aunt Ruby's Green. My other greens, and all of my blacks, when they do have issues, is yellowing foliage that looks very much like Fusarium. I suppose I should take some of the blackened foliage to the extention service to see what they say - or at least post a pic, or do some checking on web sites to make a positive ID.

All is well with the plants. It's just that when the early leaves get EB and die off they tend to go black or at least very dark green before becoming crunchy.

This isn't peculiar to my Mystery Green. It was a definite trait of Green Grape (sprawling version) last year and, if my memory serves me correctly, some blacks.

Pick any red or pink in my patch and the old leaves with EB turn yellow then light brown and crunchy.

it's this dark leaf colouration on the old leaves that makes me believe the fruits will be green... or maybe black. Nah, green for sure

Also, D, you might like to know that one of your PLs in a pot, which I entombed in tule, has set five pure uncrossed fruits for seed saves and I removed the tule, marked the trusses, and will endeavour to continue trying to get a save from all of the seven plants

My GMG is doing the same thing. Bottom leaves going very dark green then crunchy. Thought it had a virus or something but the plant other than this, looks ok.

Gave my GMG a couple of sprays of Lanosan copper stuff and the blackening of the leaves stopped. It has 10 fruit set so far and I have just fertilised it to get it going a bit.

Hey Manto,
If you get ripe ones and if, as I suspect, chances are these are not crossed coz no bees and no other toms, would you be kind enough to save some? A couple of other saves would be great insurance

They are not crossed for sure. They are starting to swell already after the fertiliser and grass mulch I added. I will save seeds for sure and send some up to you.

Here is an albeit lousy happy snappy on the cheapo camera just to document how amber these Grub's Mystery Greens can turn on you. The interior is very green still and there is a vein of pink running 1/2in into the fruit.

Got back from the Gold Coast today to find one just like the above. Two others I picked before we departed on the theme park odessy were not as golden as the vine ripened one. The taste of them ranks them the in the top 5 for this year. Sweeter than Cherokee Green but with lots of tomato punch. An absolute joy in salsa, on crackers, and toasted whole grain bread. Yes, I gave them a good workout LOL
Oh, and I saved every seed I could find Grub, and more to come yet.
