Daconil Overdose?????
After spraying daconil earlier this evening, I realized I had the dial set at 2 tablespoons per gallon instead of 1 tablespoon per gallon. I noticed the stuff was really milky looking, but didn't figure it out until I had sprayed all 24 plants. My question is, will this hurt my plants? Should I try to spray some of it off with clear water?

When I use Daconil, which I haven't had to since I moved to my new home in 1999, I always used two tbs/gal.
Not a problem.

I bought a bottle of Daconil, and it has only 1/2 the concentration.
I forgot the brand. dcarch

I remember one time this person said what they bought was useless and come to find out he had bought something with only 12.5% Daconil and that would be useless.

Thanks for the responses---my mind has been set at ease. I have had enough bad luck with my tomatoes this year with bugs, disease, and extremely hot weather. I would have cried if I messed them up with too much daconil! I am happy to report that I picked my first two ripe tomatoes this morning, both Cherokee Purple.

I use the Ortho Disease Control. I just bought the last bottle in town at the local hardware store.

I have been using 1 tbs per gallon as the directions stated. Maybe I need to be using more but so far it seems to be doing ok. Jay

I try to go with the flow and this year I have not had to resort to much other than strategic pruning. Got some beetles which are hard to control, but very spotty so far. Aphids on only one pepper, so dealt with them with a couple hose flushes. Some ground bugs are keeping themselves to my cauliflower leaves and harvest is soon.
I planted in bags this year, added more dirt on top and between then mulched. Foilage disease has been almost a non-issue. Hail damage to what grew out of the canopys and the ungodly heat has been the worst, but the temps have helped ripen stuff early. We started picking Sungolds on July 5th and just enjoyed our first tomato sandwich, Cherokee Purple and Beefmaster shared the top billing! I'm a firm believer in Daconil when it's needed. Usually it's those wet, cold springs that get my garden into that mode, where I need to spray. This early, hot summer wilts me like a squash plant, but my veggies seem to love it! -Ed |

Yes, I use the Ortho Dial-A-Spray. Actually, my plants look great, they just don't have very many tomatoes on them. I had one diseased plant, a Mortgage Lifter, so I have been diligent with the daconil. Ed, I am happy to see another person from this area on Tomatoville! Cool!

Elayne, instructions are a bit different for the dial and spray than if one were using a hand held or pump sprayer. The instructions are also a bit confusing, imo. Here's how to go about it: 1) Always set top dial to 4 oz 2) Add water in ounces first (marked on dial and spray), then add daconil using a tablespoon measure (water + daconil = total) 3.5 OZ + 1 TBSP 7.0 OZ + 2 TBSP 10.5 OZ + 3 TBSP 14.0 OZ + 4 TBSP 17.5 OZ + 5 TBSP 21.0 OZ + 6 TBSP 24.5 OZ + 7 TBSP 28.0 OZ + 8 TBSP same as above, except Daconil is in oz. Add water first, then carefully pour in daconil to reach total (water + daconil = total) 7.0 OZ + 1.0 OZ - 8 OZ 10.5 OZ + 1.5 OZ - 12 OZ 14.0 OZ + 2.0 OZ - 16 OZ 17.5 OZ + 2.5 OZ - 20 OZ 21.0 OZ + 3.0 OZ - 24 OZ 24.5 OZ + 3.5 OZ - 28 OZ 28.0 OZ + 4.0 OZ - 32 OZ 3) Mix well using a long object of some sort. I usually pick up a stick in the yard to use. Shaking the dial and spray vigorously up and down can sometimes make a mess. The reason I suggest adding water first and checking the level is so you don't overshoot your mark when adding the water. Also, if you add the Daconil first it tends to stick to the bottom and it's harder to get it to go into solution. The reason for the two different tables is different preferences, some might prefer to use a tablespoon measure, others might prefer to pour the Daconil into the dial and spray using the marks provided. In short, all you're doing is mixing water and Daconil at a 7:1 ratio in the dial and spray, then setting the dial to 4 oz. The tables above are just a handy reference. |

Thanks! I was gonna say it should be set to 4oz and then for each Tablespoon, fill the balance of 4oz with water... so if you have lots of maters & use 8 Tablespoons, fill the rest of the cup up to 32oz... but you posted it so much better!
