Okra dtm
I noticed someone had mentioned that they could not grow okra up north. I wanted to list some of the okra I have grown and DTM to make sure they have not tried a variety that maybe has a shorter DTM.
Clemson Spineless #80 58days Emerald 58days Silver Queen 80days Alabama Red 75 Burmese 58days For me Alabama Red was much later then 75 days I would even guess 100. Okra is a member of the Hollyhock family will cross easily so if you are growing more then one type and want to save seed it is best to bag the blossom. |

Rena they can grow Okra up north, folks up there just don’t like it, so they say they can’t.

More people should try. I always knew I liked okra but I didn't know how much I LOVED it until I grew it myself. And fried is probably my least favorite way to eat it. I really think it's great with tomatoes and corn and some bacon and Creole seasoning. So, so good! I am not at all bothered by the "slime" factor.

I had a bumper crop last summer, but we had weeks of near 100 and the second summer of very warm nights...In past years I had some success, but DTM are not the only factors...I have noticed Okra is similar to Eggplant, in that if the nights are dropping significantly they really poke along...
I have had best luck with Burmese and Emerald. I put out seedlings at least 4 weeks too. Northerners do need to be eased into Okra...I start by pickling it and then frying, and if anybody is still game I give them stewed Okra and tomatoes... I hate to admit it, but I am starting to really like it, and trying 2 more dwarf varities this year... Jeanne |
