Planting out.
Planting out.
What to do, I will be home in the middle of March and then going back to work. This leaves me in a dilemma, should I go ahead and plant out or what. It might freeze and it may not. If I wait till the next time I come home the plants will be a little big for the 4 inch pots. It will be in April then. I have thought about just plantin out the biggest plants the first trip home. Just a little befuddled. I am at work now and will check back in a few hours. Worth |

I am on slope until Feb 28. I plan on planting out the first week I am home. I will be there until the 19th of march. The "average" LDOF is March 15. I will be home to monitor.
I don't know how different your micro climate is from mine. I am ~ 800' in elevation just east of 35 surrounded by the Cibolo and Guadalupe valleys. I think my LDOF date is is based on averages from the dryer higher hills just half an hour to the west of me and I am trusting the almanac for an early plant out and the moon phase is correct. (My Pagan Moon monitoring is revealed ) I would tend to say at your only slightly higher latitude that Middle March plant out with you home for 2 should be safe. Of course we are entering hail season pretty soon! Ah the inherent risk of central Texas gardening! What is Suze to the East doing?

Bryan,
I usualy plant out on the first of march but I'm not going to be home after the middle of march to protect them. Sometimes I plant the last week of FEB but last year has me spooked. Worth |

I planted mine 2 weeks ago. Lost a few due to the drop in temp but I have a bunch of seeds and I couldn't wait any longer. What are you going to do about watering??

This is tuff. Since you are going to have to leave them unattended why not order some grow web or re may or agribon cloth and cover your plants until you get home and then set the cages? The Texas cages shouldn't cause too much root trauma. I thing the fabric has a bit of frost protection. If I was timed on my schedule like you this year I would go ahead and plant out and order some fabric.
There are many suppliers to get floating row cover from. http://www.trickl-eez.com/agribon.htm

Dcarch,
I am getting a green house soon but not in time for this year and there is no way I could keep 450 plants in the size green house I am getting, because I am not putting them in 1 gallon containers. I plan on getting a 12 X 16 green house, not quit big enough. Robin The watering in the spring will take care of its self as most but not all springs here are wet enough. There have been times when I haven’t watered much until June. If watering needs to be done then my wife will water at my house and another lady will water at the other garden. About 200 or 300 plants are all I need to take care of at this time; I plan on selling or giving away the rest. I think I will just plant the things and hope for the best. Worth |

Worth, I know you said you're not getting the GH this year, but I have a small GH, 8 x 12 and have had a little over 300 plants (in 4" pots) in mine, and I could have fit another 100 or so I'm sure. The key is the proper shelving which can be broken down and removed. So, I think a 12 x 16 would be plenty of room for your 450.
I think your idea of planting the largest plants first, and doing 2 plantings in stages is the safest approach. Duane

Thanks Duane
After I poated the part on the green house I knew I messed up. What I meant to say is that I did not think I could get 400 1gallon pots in the green house. I don't post much up here as I put in long hours and stay tired. This leads me to worry about what I post. Thanks to all of you guys. Worth |

As many as you grow I understand the conservatism Suze! It would probably take me a couple of weeks to plant out the numbers you have. 11 days and counting

Duane,
You will have vine-ripened tomatoes before we plant ours! I think our LDOF is May 15, or so, plant from end of May to first part of June! Good luck!

Alright Duane! You might want to start a journal. That is what I have begun to keep track of dates and variety performance year to year.
