OP plants at ALDI store!
I was pleasantly surprised to find a selection of big, healthy tomato plants at my neighborhood ALDI grocery store this weekend - and they weren't your usual Better Boy or other hybrids.
The tags called them "heirloom tomatoes," which some of us might not agree with, but they were all open-pollenated varieties that you usually have to grow from seed. I bought a Mortgage Lifter and a Brandywine. Of course, I don't know WHICH Mortgage Lifter or Brandywine they are, but the Brandywine was definitely potato-leafed. Other varieties I recall seeing are Mr. Stripey (the Non-Tigerella variety), Beefsteak , and Matt's Wild Cherry. There was no mention of where the plants were grown. Each tag had a short description of the variety, and a recipe for Balsamic Heirloom Tomato Salad on the back. Yum! |

Our Aldi's had a selection about a month ago; dont remember the varieties. The rack held about 150 I gallon pots and about 80% had been sold. They were healthy looking 8-10" plants. The main thing I remember is that they were $3.69 each and thought "ouch"/
