Too darn hot!
Hi all-
I hope everyone is having better weather than me. It's been in the upper 90's all week, and this weekend our temps are supposed to go up to 103F!! I already have some shriveled blossoms. It's really making me mad. Why, or why, do we have to go straight from winter to full-on, awful summer heat? I just had to vent. Wishing you all better weather (and fruitset) than I'm getting! Just hope it passes quickly. The last 3 weeks we have been 10 degrees above average on our highs and lows. No fruit set inthose conditions. Those are usually the best weeks here, as the plants are larger with more blossoms. Yesterday, we had winds staying in the 20 mph and gusts in the 40s. I hope the squash survived.

It's been a brutal hot, windy and dry spring. I have to decide soon what plants to go ahead and take up since for all practical purposes if there are no fruit left on them they are done.

Man, just spent some time tying up plants, documenting, etc - is just a killer out there. I think that I have my first incident of TSW - Summer Sunrise, part of the dwarf project...may need to get it out of its spot this evening...trying to decide if it is just the extreme heat, I missed it on one of my watering passes, etc. There is so much I would like to do out there, but not when it is like this!

Well,I envy you guys: we just entered our 36th hour of continuous rain, temperatures 15 degrees Celsius, this week alone we had over 100 mm of rain, which is about one seventh of the total rainfall for one year,

It's been cool here and will continue to be for at least the next several days. Cool even for us, that is. Sure wish we could split the difference!

I was reading the headline and nodding in agreement, it's too darn hot and too darn humid today. However, many of you might not think that the low 90's is too darn hot, but for someone from Scandinavia this feels like something close to hell.
About blossoms. How much heat is too much heat for them? Is there a general temperature range they can tolerate, or does it wary from variety to variety? If it also is humid, will that make it worse or better for the blossoms? Hilde |

Jenn, looks like you are ready for a Vermont vacation. Right now it's 56 degrees. It was supposed to hit 80 today, and I hear it did in the Champlain valley, about 50-60 miles west, but our high was 63, windy and drizzly.
I planted my tomatoes out a week ago today, and we've had rain and highs in the 60's, lows in the upper 40's, and the tomatoes are loving it. I've got wide open flowers on about 10 varieties so far. |

Agreeing with Sherry. Wish we could split the heat difference. It's in the 50s, or the 60s if we're lucky for a high. The skies are overcast and it rains at least some part of ever day. We are cold and below the normal high by at least ten degrees. Oh how I wish we could have some of your weather. I finally put in my tomatoes several days ago instead of letting them sit in their pots. I'm afraid that if we don't get some warmth soon, they will not survive. They sure aren't growing.

Noon on Saturday in Raleigh....95 degrees F, 44% humidity, dewpoint of 71, heat index 101! Only slightly saving grace is a 6-8 mile breeze, which feels pretty good when you step into the shade! Will it hit 100? They are forecasting 102 (or at least some are!) for tomorrow...at least we can still use a hose to hand water!

Noon on Saturday in true upstate NY and the temp is 91 and humidity 72%.
It was cool when I went to bed so I just kept the house closed up, anticipating this heat, and right now inside it's 73. It's supposed to hit 90-100 every day until next Friday with possible isolated T storms each day. My brother left this AM to drive back down to NC, I just finished watching the Women's French Open Final, I just let back in my one cat who I think prefers the coolness of the house, now I go to the back room to make out bills, and then take a nap b'c my brother wanted me to wake him up at 5AM, which I did, so I deserve a nap.

Barkeater: Yes, I COULD use a Vermont vacation!!! Your temps sound wonderful.
Craig: Much the same temps, humidity, and forecast here today. It is nearly unbearable outside . I actually went out and watered my garden late last evening (I don't normally water then) because I couldn't stand to do it when the sun was up. The plants are needing water almost every day. I will say that the small tomato plants are growing well and holding their own. I think fruitset is only going to be a major problem on the pink potato leaf varieties, as usual. The melon, cuke, okra, and squash plants seem to be thriving in the heat. The peppers seem to be fine, too. I just discovered my first Ancho/Poblanos |
